According to the Nutrition Business Journal, organic food sales in the U.S. have gone from $11 billion in 2004 to nearly $30 billion in 2012. More and more Americans are interested in the healthy impact organic foods have on their bodies including a more chemical-free diet, less processed foods, grass fed beef or organically raised chicken, and foods that have not been grown with pesticides.
While there have been numerous studies indicating that organic foods can have a positive impact on your wellbeing eating organic is not the only way to live an ecologically-friendly life. Let’s take a look at some other ways we can all live more organically that don’t necessarily involve diet.
1. Switch to Organic Cotton Clothes
Pesticides that are used to protect cotton crops are one of the largest contributors to all the agricultural chemicals in the U.S. In addition to these pesticides seeping into the soil and effecting the environment, the clothes made this way may also contain leftover pesticides that can leach into your body from the fabric. Instead of getting clothing that is made in this conventional way look for organic cotton clothing which tends to be made of better quality fabrics and justifies the slightly higher price tag.
2. Use Organic Grooming Products
Traditionally made body soaps, cleansers, gels and other cleaning products are commonly laced with synthetic chemicals. Rather than putting these on your body on a daily basis instead get in the habit of reading labels and avoiding anything that sounds like chemicals. Better still, opt for brands that you know use organic ingredients like ginseng, olive oil or coconut oil and benefit from nature’s specialized treatments.
3. Clean Organically
You likely have a ton of non-organic cleaning products in your home that can adversely affect your health. Cleaners like bleach and detergent have volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can lead to respiratory problems, allergic reactions and headaches amongst other health issues. It’s important to note that not all cleaning alternatives with the label “green” on them are not necessarily safer. Lung.org recommends using warm water and soap in most instances, baking soda for scrubbing, vinegar and water on glass, and other organic blends you can research online.
4. Create Your Own Insecticides
There is a reason the roach’s you spray shrivel up and die so quickly once your nail em’ with the Raid. While ridding your home of insects is satisfying, the process often causes undo harm to you and your family. Spays that are used to kill insects often circulate into the air and into your lungs. Rather than inhaling the same thing you use to kill your insect enemies, create your own organic insecticides with advice in this post.
5. Walk, Bike or Carpool
While one way to be easier on the earth is to get a hybrid, purchasing a new car is a rather large investment. Rather than driving your car everywhere you go, instead make it a habit to walk closer distances, ride your bike or carpool to make small changes in your life. Who knows, maybe your friends will catch on and join you in your crusade to live a more healthy, active lifestyle!
